Our Art and Design curriculum encourages pupils to nurture their creativity. Our philosophy is to encourage children to explore their creativity as they find out about teh world around them.
Pupils will be inspired by the work of artists/craftspeople throughout history and from different cultures. These experiences will inform their own ideas, enabling them to create 2D art, such as drawing, painting and printing, as well as, 3D projects, including sculpture and collage. Through this they will develop their understanding of colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture and tone within their work.
We believe that Art and Design form a vital part of children’s education and have a significant and valuable role, alongside the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils through an exciting, relevant and exciting creative curriculum. Our enhanced Art curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists, as well as, local and global themes.
As pupils progress throughout School, they are increasingly able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They grow to know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Art and Design stimulates creativity and promotes imagination. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern, construction and different materials and processes. Children become involved in shaping their environments, they learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions.
The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the School to ensure progression, although we recognise that this progression is not a linear journey. This includes opportunities to revise and revisit so children can recall and apply skills and knowledge learnt. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. This enables links to other curriculum areas, including History and Geography, with children developing a considerable knowledge of individual artists as well as individual works and Art movements.
We believe our children will:
- acquire an appreciation, enjoyment and love of Art and Design
- be enthused by the creative-based learning experiences
- develop positive attitudes to Art and Design
- demonstrate awareness of Art and Design across the curriculum and the wider world
- demonstrate their pride and the high status of Art and Design through the classroom, wider school and in displays of their quality work
- develop personal qualities including: perseverance, independent thinking, self-confidence and co-operation through Art and Design.
- develop an increasing awareness of self and peer assessment and how to improve their own abilities.
Our curriculum links to National Curriculum expectations and is built upon a bespoke spiralised approach that encourages accumulative progressive experiences and skill based learning. We do not follow a set scheme but do supplement our creative offer with ideas from Access Art and Kapow websites to ensure our offer is creative and aspirational.
We are thrilled to share that we have achieved a GOLD rating for our Creative Arts and Performing Arts provision, this was awarded in June 2022
