Maths at St. Luke's
At St. Luke’s we like to ‘never miss a maths’ moment!’

We are dedicated to providing engaging, relevant and lively Mathematics lessons for all. Children are provided with opportunities to learn through a range of activities which aim to deliver a varied curriculum. Where possible, learning is linked to the children’s current topic and real-life contexts as well as being interactive and mindful of the different ways in which children learn.
All daily Mathematics lessons in year 1 - 6 follow a similar structure:
- Quick 5/10 - rapid recall of multiplication and division facts, number bonds or related facts
- Recall of previous session
- Part One - learning a skill using our Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach, introduce vocabulary for session
- Part Two - applying a skill through problem solving, critical thinking and real-life problems.
This structure allows the children at St. Luke's to make links with previous knowledge and allows them to think critically about their learning. They are encouraged to use and apply in each session, skills and application.
In Reception, the structure of the lesson is similar to the rest of the school. They have a quick 5/10 which will be linked to counting or number facts. After this, children will have their main input where they will learn a new skill or will build on a skill. They will then have dedicated adult-led activities linked to this skill, they will also have various independent mathematics activities during their free-flow time. The outside environment is used to inspire and compliment classroom learning.
All children at St. Luke’s are included in their own assessment, they share what has gone well in the lesson and any parts they may need more support with. This valuable conversation with the teacher allows for children to feel successful with their learning.
Our curriculum links to National Curriculum expectations and is built upon a bespoke spiralised approach that encourages a deep understanding of key concepts and number. We do not follow a set scheme.
