Science
Science should not set limits to imagination.
At St. Luke's we believed that a high-quality Science education provides children with a good foundation of understanding the world around them, specifically through the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Children learn how Science has changed lives as well as people's understanding of the world we live in.
Our science curriculum is carefully planned to ensure coverage of the National Curriculum as well as ensuring progression across the school allows children to build upon their scientific knowledge and ability to work scientifically. We encourage children to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.
As well as dedicated science lessons, we celebrate science through our Science weeks. In these weeks, we use the British Science Week theme to help deliver exciting, engaging lessons. We also have a whole school question for the week, such as 'which item makes the best insulator?' or 'what is gravity and how does it effect me?'. In these sessions children from Nursery to Year 6 investigate the question and produce work linked to it.
Over the week we also encourage children to take part in 'Kitchen Science' where experiments and investigations are done using household objects. These session are a great hit with the children!
Our curriculum links to National Curriculum expectations and is built upon a bespoke spiralised approach that encourages accumulative progressive experiences and skill based hierarchical learning.
