The main barriers that can be faced by eligible pupils are:

• Limited vocabulary, poor verbal skills and early language development 
• Limited reading experiences, poor phonological awareness and reading fluency
• Limited life experiences leading to poor general knowledge
• Low ambition and aspiration
• Low self-esteem, mental health and emotional well-being
